The Devi Bhagavata Purana, also known as the Devi Bhagavatam, is a revered Sanskrit scripture in Hinduism’s Purana genre. Recognized as a major or minor Purana depending on the region, it is essential in Shaktism, a tradition that worships Devi or Shakti as the supreme creator, preserver, and destroyer. Comprising twelve sections (Skandhas) and 318 chapters, the text highlights the Goddess as the source of all existence and spiritual liberation, blending Advaita Vedanta's monistic philosophy with devotion to Shakti.
Dated between the 9th and 14th centuries, the Devi Bhagavata Purana contains the Devi Gita, a significant section often circulated separately. It also references historical periods, with certain chapters reflecting the spread of Islam in India. Together with Devi Mahatmya, the text has been pivotal in shaping Shakta tradition and devotion to the feminine divine. Traditionally attributed to sage Veda Vyasa, the title translates to “devotee of the blessed Devi.”
